The storyline was something very different for me. The basic plot is that life is simply a chess match. Those that I would consider "noblemen" were called Gamesmen and had specific powers related to their position in The Game. The peasant-type characters were called Pawns and were subject to the will of the Gamesmen and could be sacrificed for the benefit of the play if necessary.The protagonist, Peter, is a 15 year-old boy who's powers are just beginning to manifest due to the dire circumstances he finds himself in.
This book is more fantasy than science fiction and I'm not sure that it strictly meets the guidelines of the SF reading challenge but it was a recommendation and I went with it. The writing is well-done and the story is interesting and different.
The Street Lawyer
This book was ok. I seem to always be disappointed with Grisham. Because of all the hype and the bestseller status, I expect so much more. Although the stories are usually well-written, I just don't find them interesting or worth my time. This book took me FOREVER to finish...lol
Dawn
I read this for the first contact category in my SF Reading Challenge. Centuries after a nuclear war destroys civilization on Earth, the main character, Lilith Iyapo, awakes to discover that she is held captive aboard a starship. Her captors, the Oankali, have rescued the remaining humans and restored Earth. However, this rescue was not without a catch -- these hideously grotesque aliens survive by merging genetically with primitive peoples.
The basic question is if the surviving humans should "mate" with the aliens in order to continue a form of human species on Earth or let the human race die out through a "clean" death.
This book would also satisfy the non-caucasian category and probably social SF. The Oankali ship is multi-generational for their species although the humans are in suspended animation for most of their time on the ship.
This book is the first in the Xenogenesis series.

The first 2/3 of the book was just okay. The best part was the last 1/3 where the attacks were documented.

Monster Island
I read Frostbite - the first of David Wellington's werewolf trilogy - and really liked it. I did not enjoy this one nearly as much. The addition of a more supernatural aspect to the Zombie premise was a bit too much. I would have preferred to stick with the straight-up zombie story rather than adding in Mael and his band of mummies.The characters, other than Ayaan, are not really very likable and don't make you anxious for everything to turn out okay for them.
I will read others by Wellington -- and may even finish this trilogy as I think it was his earliest one and that may account for the issues in the first book. Unfortunately, it will be later as there are others in the queue that have been more interesting/enjoyable lately.

Bestial: Werewolf Apocalypse
Interesting premise. Almost the entire population of Cincinnati Ohio turns into lycanthropes - the 4 who appear to be immune to whatever has caused this change have to survive the 3 nights of the full moon.Not crazy about the author's style of writing or storytelling but the story itself was good.

The Female Man
This book was absolutely awful. The writing style was difficult to read; the characters were both uninteresting and unlikable; and there was too much of a "feminist" slant to the story. If I hadn't had to read it for a challenge, I would have given up after the first 25 pages.
